There are two possible paths to become an SCMA member:

Safety Test for Experienced Climbers

Do you have at least two or more years of experience in either leading or following multi-pitch traditional climbs? Can you tie a bowline, prusik knot, grapevine knot and a clove hitch? Are you competent at rappelling, prusiking, and setting safe multi-pitch belay anchors? You may be eligible to take our safety test, offered (only) four times a year. Click here for an online application to take the safety test.

Basic Rockclimbing Safety Skills Course...

...for Beginners or Gym Climbers with limited outdoor experience. You've done some climbing either in a gym or top roping at the local sport crag; you may have even led some sport climbs but need more work on trad anchors and protection; you can sport lead in the gym, but have never trad led or followed on an outdoor three to five pitch route? The annual SCMA Basic Rock Climbing Safety Skills Course is offered once a year on alternate weekends (starting in January and ending in April). The course covers knots, belaying, rappelling, self-rescue, climbing technique, top-rope anchors, and multi-pitch climbing. All instructors are volunteers and experienced members of the SCMA. Click here for the online application to enroll in the Safety Skills Course.
