Trip Reports from SCMA Members

SCMA's New Honorary Members
by SCMA Member Alois Smrz

On behalf of all SCMA members and associates, I would like to congratulate Robert Somoano and Bob Lindgren on becoming SCMA’s new Honorary Members. They join John Mendenhall (d), Ruth Mendenhall (d), Chuck Wilts (d), Ellen Wilts, Glen Dawson, Royal Robbins and Nick Clinch, who have been our Honored Members since the seventies.

Robert Somoano has been an active member of the RCS since 1975 and SCMA member since its inception. Robert has 24 years of continuous membership. He’s one of the Founding Members of the SCMA. Together with several others, he put down his own money to start the SCMA after the Sierra Club fiasco in 1986. Robert served on the first SCMA Board from 1986 to 1989. He also served on various committees at the turbulent start of our club. Robert has been very active in the Sierra as well as the Cascades, Tetons, Alaska and Peru. He’s an excellent rock climber, mountaineer and backcountry skier.

Bob Lindgren started to climb with the RCS in 1967. He has 32 years of uninterrupted membership to his credit. Over the years, Bob has brought many people on his trips to Tahquitz, Fossil Falls and the Sierra, introduced them to the club and watched them grow as rock climbers and SCMA members. Bob has taught rock climbing to many people in our club. A climber’s climber, we can all learn from his graceful movement on the rock. In 1988, he was among the first SCMA members to tackle the 5.12 barrier when he climbed the direct variation to Arcy Farcy at Suicide Rock. Bob has several first ascents at Suicide, the Needles, Domelands and on Thunderbolt Peak in the Palisades.
