Canyoneering with Rich Henke

Tuesday, January 13, 2015 at the SCMA General Meeting SCMA member Rich Henke will present a program on canyoneering.  While still an occasional rock climber, Rich now spends more time descending canyons. Rich started canyoneering about a dozen years ago, mostly in Southern Utah, but has also descended more than 20 canyons in the San Gabriel Mountains and done some 4,000 foot descents in Death Valley. The January program will include images from some of the better canyons in the San Gabriels, Death Valley, Anza Borrego, Zion, and the Escalante area. Rich will also discuss how to start canyoneering and there will be plenty of time for questions.

Rich has been a member of the SCMA/RCS for over three decades. In 1994 he summited Dhaulagiri, the 7th highest mountain in the world at 26,800 feet. Other noteworthy climbs are the Cassin Ridge on Denali and the North Face of Mt Robson in Canada.

The meeting will be held at Stronghold Climbing Gym, 650 South Avenue 21, Los Angeles, 90031, due to our normal Griffith Park meeting space not being available.  The meeting starts at 7:30 PM with some brief general club business followed by the presentation.  There is no cost to attend and members as well as non-members are always welcome to come and see what the SCMA is all about.
